Chicago Gastric Bypass Surgery:

Gastric bypass surgery is designed to make the stomach smaller and allow food to bypass part of the small intestine. Westlake Hospital provides Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery that uses tiny incisions and special laparoscopic technologies to create a tiny stomach pouch so you will feel more full when you eat.

The Chicago Center for Bariatric Surgery at Westlake Hospital provides patients suffering from morbid obesity with the treatment and support they need to lose excess weight and keep it off.

» Chicago Weight Loss Surgery Options

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Lap-Band Surgery - Offers a reversible, adjustable approach to weight loss surgery. A ring is placed around the upper part of the stomach, to ensure that you feel more full and eat less. The band is adjustable and can be removed if you choose.
  • Single Incision Laparoscopic Gastric Lap-Band Surgery - The same as a regular Lap-Band surgery, except the band is inserted through a single incision, as opposed to six cuts - minimizing scarring and pain, and promoting a faster recovery time.
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Surgery - In the Gastrectomy surgical procedure, the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach, following the major curve. The open edges are then attached together, often with surgical staples, to form a sleeve or tube with a banana shape. This procedure is an alternative to Chicago gastric bypass surgery and permanently reduces the size of the stomach.

» After Chicago Gastric Bypass Surgery

In our experience, consistent follow-up care is essential to losing excess weight and keeping it off for the rest of your life. That is why we request that you meet regularly with our:

  • Bariatric Gastric Bypass Surgeon
  • Bariatric Coordinator
  • Registered Dietician
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Bariatric Support Group

These support services are extremely valuable in helping you to achieve and maintain your goals. Based on our program's data, the average one-year weight loss with LAP-BAND is 56 pounds, and the average one-year weight loss with gastric bypass surgery is about 76 pounds. Most patients begin to lose weight within the first few weeks of gastric bypass surgery.

Patients will follow up with the Chicago gastric bypass surgeon regularly during the first year and then annually. How well you maintain your diet and exercise regime will determine the stability of your weight. Our staff will monitor your weight frequently and provide important dietary and exercise counseling.

In addition to the weight loss, you will also improve your overall health, noticing an elimination of many weight-related illnesses such as sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyper-cholesterol. Nearly all patients report a significant improvement in their quality of life after gastric bypass surgery.

Patients are encouraged to attend our gastric bypass surgery support groups for dietary, exercise and psychological support. Call 708-763-NEWU (6398) to find out when the next session will be held.

Our Chicago gastric bypass surgery program meets the highest standards for safety, care and results.
