The Surgical Process

To start the bariatric surgery process, you may either attend a free informational session OR view an online informational session. Attending the session in person will give you a chance to meet our Team and ask questions about our Program. After attending the seminar or viewing the online session, you will receive a call from our program coordinator to schedule a visit with the surgical team.

If you would like to attend the free informational session at our River Forest Location, please click here to register. Or, if you would prefer to watch the informational session online, please click here. You will need to complete a short informational form before you view the video.

If you have questions, please call 708-763-NEWU.

After meeting with one of our surgeons please contact the staff at Westlake Hospital, and our staff will assist you in navigating the following steps and insurance requirements within our Program. These steps may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Submission of insurance requirements and documentation.
  • Consultations with our clinical psychologist, dietitian, bariatric surgeon and other specialists such as a cardiologist and pulmonologist.
  • Attendance at bariatric support group meetings prior to surgery.
  • Completion of any additional diagnostic tests.

During Your Hospital Stay
Your stay at Westlake Hospital will depend on which procedure you and your surgeon have chosen as a tool to help you lose weight. With Gastric Bypass, there is a 2-3 day hospital stay. The LAP-BAND and SILS LAP-BAND procedures are less-invasive, and patients can either go home the same day of surgery, or stay overnight.

All patients will have surgery in our state-of-the-art surgical suites and be carefully monitored during the postoperative phase. Advantages of the laparoscopic approach include reduced postoperative pain, shorter hospital stay and a faster return to work (2-3 weeks).

You will be given explicit instructions on what and how much to eat. Pain is usually mild and controlled easily by medication. Nurses, dietitians, radiologists and staff surgeons will all be monitoring your care closely.

We are committed to you and your weight loss journey and therefore we have the appropriate equipment and chairs to care for you. In addition, our team does every thing possible to ensure that you have a comfortable stay.

Your physical activity will be conservative but we will ask you to take short walks.

After Your Surgery
In our experience, consistent follow-up care is essential to losing excess weight and keeping it off for the rest of your life. That is why we request that you meet regularly with our:

  • Bariatric Surgeon
  • Bariatric Coordinator
  • Registered Dietician
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Bariatric Support Group

These support services are extremely valuable in helping you to achieve and maintain your goals. Based on our program's data, the average one-year weight loss with LAP-BAND is 56 pounds, and the average one-year weight loss with gastric bypass is about 76 pounds. Most patients begin to lose weight within the first few weeks of surgery.

Patients will follow up with the surgeon regularly during the first year and then annually. How well you maintain your diet and exercise regime will determine the stability of your weight. Our staff will monitor your weight frequently and provide important dietary and exercise counseling.

In addition to the weight loss, you will also improve your overall health, noticing an elimination of many weight-related illnesses such as sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, and hyper-cholesterol. Nearly all patients report a significant improvement in their quality of life after surgery.

Patients are encouraged to attend our support groups for dietary, exercise and psychological support. Call 708-763-NEWU (6398) to find out when the next session will be held.
